There are still a few days left on the calendar for July and I’m already reading my September issue of Macworld, which is brimming with reviews, overflowing with 50 Mac Gems handpicked by Dan Frakes, and chock full of secrets, including two pieces by Yours Truly (”Solve Printer Problems” and “Tiger’s Secret Tools”). No, I’m not privy to forthcoming issues because I’m a contributor to Macworld. I get to glimpse the future because I have a digital subscription to Macworld through Zinio.com.

Okay, this is an ad. I’ll make some parking meter change if you click through these links and subscribe, but why wouldn’t you? With Zinio, I get my Macworld well before the issues hit the stands, which is always well before my copies arrive in the mail. Best of all, I can keep them archived on my hard drive where they’re searchable, instead of piled up on the floor of my office where they gather dust. And searching through a stack of old magazines is like trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Just in case you’re not a Mac user, here are a few other magazines that might interest you that are available through Zinio:

The Zinio Reader makes reading onscreen tolerable (I prefer it to Adobe Acrobat Reader), and you can add notes and highlighting to your magazines, print spreads, even share an issue with a friend for free. And Zinio can be a good deal, too. Digital Camera World, one of my favorite photography rags, is $15.99 at the newsstand and about $140 for a subscription. But it’s only $30 bucks for a digital subscription through Zinio!

I’m not ready to give up my printed copies completely (sometimes I like to read in the… bathtub), but why wait to line up at the post office or Borders for the latest issue of your favorite magazines. Get ’em while their fresh, like I do, at Zinio.com.

Read your “Secret Tools” article and decided to play a bit. I’d never installed the Developer package, so as I started that process, I got a message that it only works with 10.3. Have tried to find an update, but haven’t so far. Any ideas? Thanks.

    2. Robert Ellis Says:

Thanks for your message (sent separately) that you figured this out. But let me know if you run into any other problems. Enjoy!

    3. Mark Dorlas Says:

Sorry, but I’m really not happy about Zinio. It has given me nothing but problems. A very un-Mac like program that gives contradictory messages. I just sent an email to upgrade to the paper version again. Why can’t they just be PDF’s?

    4. Robert Ellis Says:

Mark, I agree that the Zinio interface isn’t as polished as most Mac apps, but I haven’t had any real problems with it and in some ways prefer it to Acrobat. I’m not sure what you mean by contradictory messages. The real problem is that I’d rather read the print copy away from my desk—but Zinio is great for searching back issues and getting the jump on the print version.

    5. Mark Dorlas Says:

You’re right, I should clarify about the contradictary messages…

In a pop-up it said: “This publications has not been downloaded”. Then in the brushed metal window it said: “Your publications have been downloaded”.

Then, below that, it had a list of the publications, preceded with the word ‘Error’, in parentheses.

I’m not completely computer-illiterate but I ran out of options there. Nothing I could find in the prefs or in the online ‘help’ that got me any further. And this is the second time Zinio is giving me these problems. A year or two ago I spent another couple of days in frustration, trying to get the thing to work.

Sorry, but I find it a bad program. I have a Mac, not a pc. I really believe I should not have to put up with situations like this…

    6. Robert Ellis Says:

Mark, I haven’t experienced any of the problems you describe, but they sound pretty frustrating. I’d try a clean reinstall of Zinio and bail if that didn’t work. Good luck!

    8. Robert Ellis Says:

Yes, I have feeds. Just look to the right side menu under Feeds. Or click on the big orange feed icon at the top right of the page.
