PodReader is an application that facilitates making electronic documents like eBooks readable on your iPod and is still in the early stages of development.
PodReader is planned to rapidly mature into an application tailored for PDA-type functionality to include reading of various types of electronic media.
At the outset of this project, there are only a very limited number of applications that address enabling PDA-type functionality or eDoc reading for the iPod. None of these applications were distributed under any type of public license with source code. Thus, their development and progression rests in the hands of a few–and some of them you have to pay for.
PodReader is being developed as an open source project distributed under the GPL in hopes of it rapidly surpassing the combined functionality of these existing closed source applications. Distribution under the GPL is a significant ideological difference from existing alternatives in and of itself, because it means is that any other developer who wants to contribute changes to the project can do so. In the long run, this means the project has more potential to grow and be maintained than the existing alternatives…plus it will always stay free!
Development efforts are largely tailored toward user requests, so make your voice heard today. The next planned release includes RSS and Atom feed syncing among other things.
