iPhoto 5 supports RAW files—at least you can import and preview them. But click the Edit button to edit a RAW file and you’re actually editing a JPG version created by iPhoto. Even if you set up Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as your external editor, double-clicking on an image in iPhoto opens the JPG version of the image. Here’s how to quickly access that RAW image from within iPhoto.
To open the RAW image, drag the thumbnail preview from iPhoto and drop it on the Photoshop or Photoshop Elements application icon in your Dock. The RAW image will open, but only if you haven’t previously opened the image by double-clicking. If you’ve opened the JPG by double-clicking the file, then dragging and dropping the file will open the JPG again.

To “fix” the problem of the RAW image not opening in PhotoShop once you’ve opened it once as a JPEG (by double clicking) is to control-click (or right-click) and select “Revert to Original”. That will then allow you to drag and drop the image onto the PhotoShop icon and open your RAW file instead of the JPEG.

Sweet! Thanks a ton for this tip. It makes working with raw in iPhoto a whole lot less painful.
