Okay, you can’t really attend Stanford for free, but Stanford on iTunes is the next best thing and it’ll save you about $31,000 a year. Stanford University is offering a wealth of free audio and video content—lectures, learning materials, music, sports, and more—via Apple’s iTunes Music Store. We’re talking the good stuff, including video of Steve Job’s commencement speech, lectures by the Dalai Lama, lectures from the Technology Ventures Program, and readings by guest authors (including Michael Chabon and Tobias Wolff). New content is added weekly.

PostSecret describes itself as “ongoing community art project where people mail-in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard.” The postcards are beautiful, moving, raw examples of outsider art. The site posts about ten new secrets every Sunday, and a book, PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives is scheduled for release in December.

Who needs cable? AmericaFreeTV offers seven video channels, plus a test channel streaming H.264. Channels include Sci Fi and Horror, Movie Classics, Comedy, Music Videos, Snow Boarding videos from Deluxe Snow Crew, Indy Reels, and Training videos from Multicast Tech.

Okay, these channels aren’t going to replace HBO or Showtime, but when I landed on the site the Indy Reels channel was playing When We Were Kings, a 1997 documentary of the 1974 championship bout between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, and Mau Mau Sex Sex, a 2001 documentary about Dan Sonney and David Friedman, “The Sunshine Boys of Smut.” Both were worth watching.

UbuWeb is “a completely independent resource dedicated to all strains of the avant-garde, ethnopoetics, and outsider arts.” It’s a treasure trove of alternative media. You won’t find the latest releases from Hollywood here, but if you have an appetite for Dadaism, Surrealism and the avant-garde, UbuWeb offers an eclectic archive of films, sounds, poetry, and conceptual writing.

The film archive includes such notable classics as James Broughton’s This Is It and The Gardener of Eden, Luis Buñuel’s Un Chien andalou (pictured above) and Marcel Duchamp’s Anemic Cinema, as well as a recording of a performance of John Cage’s 4′33″ (four minutes and 33 seconds of silence; the noise the audience makes is the music). You’ll also find films from Joseph Beuys, Ed Emshwiller, Laszio Moholy-Nagy, and Man Ray. Don’t miss Yoko Ono’s and John Lennon’s Erection.

The audio files range from Erik Satie’s Selected Works to Mick Jagger’s soundtrack for Kenneth Anger’s Invocation of My Demon Brother. Be sure to check out the 365 Days Project, which offered an MP3 for every day in 2003, including Picking Up Girls Made Easy – The Women’s Clothing Store Pick-Up (January 15th) and Muhammad Ali’s Ali’s Historical Theme Song (April 16th).

Actually, it isn’t that cold here (in Petaluma, California). Still, this site, developed by Look and Feel New Media and sponsored by Jockey, is a fun example of Flash. You can make your own snowflake or visit the gallery to see just how flakey people can be. You can download your snowflake—or any flake from the gallery—as a JPEG or EPS file.
