I want to help some of my newbie Windows friends get started with news feeds. Can any Windows users out there recommend their favorite free newsreaders? While we’re at it, Mac users can chime in with their favorite free newsreaders for the Mac.

I like NetNewsWire Lite. It’s got everything I need, which isn’t much. But it works and I don’t have to think.

I think Vienna (http://sourceforge.net/projects/vienna-rss) is a pretty wonderful (free) RSS reader.

NewsFire is very slick though I keep coming back to NetNewsWire. The lite version is great as well for people who use newsreaders on a lite basis!

Jon, I took at look at Vienna some time ago, but didn’t think it was quite up to snuff. The latest version (2.0.0.2006) definitely looks more promising.
Hey, where are all the Windows users?!

I’ve tested lately about 20 news reader for their use in an enterprise environment. The winner was RSSBandit (needs .NET), 2nd place for RSSOwl (needs Java), 3rd Sharpreader (needs .NET), 4th wticker. The first two readers had all technical features we needed, including authentification and SSL. If you don’t need this, maybe other readers are better. However for beginners I would recommend RSSOwl, as it is very intuitive and simple to use but has all technical features.

taffit, your comment must have been lost when I migrated to my new host. Sorry about that! I’ve posted it again manually.
Also, thanks for these links to lists of feedreaders, which you sent to me directly:
